Every gram of saffron requires roughly 150 crocus flowers, each picked by hand at dawn during a short autumn harvest. The three red stigmas inside each flower are separated by hand and dried the same day. No machine can do this work, which is why real saffron costs more per gram than almost any other food — and why suspiciously cheap 'saffron' usually isn't saffron.

We sell only whole, all-red threads so you can inspect them yourself. Real saffron threads are deep crimson with a flared, trumpet-shaped tip; they smell honeyed and hay-like; and steeped in warm water they release color slowly, turning it golden over several minutes. Fake saffron (dyed corn silk or safflower) bleeds an instant, artificial red and smells of little. Try the water test with any jar you buy from us — we welcome it.

A generous pinch of 10–15 threads is enough for most family-sized dishes — a pot of rice, a stew, or a batch of dessert. For tea, 5–7 threads per small pot is plenty. More is not better: too much saffron turns food bitter.

Stored properly — sealed, cool, dark, and dry — saffron keeps its color and aroma for up to two years. It doesn't spoil after that, but it slowly fades. Each jar we ship carries a packed-on date so you know exactly how fresh it is.

Keep the jar tightly closed in a cool, dark cupboard away from sunlight, steam, and humidity. Don't store it above the stove or refrigerate it (condensation is the enemy). Never dip a wet spoon into the jar.

Because saffron is a food product, we can't accept returns of opened jars. If your order arrives damaged, incorrect, or you're unhappy with it for any reason, contact us within 30 days and we'll make it right with a replacement or refund. Unopened items in original packaging can be returned within 30 days.

Yes. Saffron is simply the dried stigma of the Crocus sativus flower — a single-ingredient plant product with nothing added. Our threads contain no gluten, animal products, fillers, or additives. As always, it is sold as a culinary spice.
